Greenwood (1788-1851), who, in 1824, commenced what is believed
to be the first omnibus service in the country, running between Pendleton,
in Salford, to Manchester. It was such a success that within 25 years there
were over 60 similar omnibuses vying for passengers on the main road into
Manchester. In 1880, a consolidation took place which
created the Manchester Carriage and Tramways Company, by
merging the MCC, Manchester & Salford Tramways Co., and Manchester
Suburban Tramways Co. This company, at its greatest extent, in 1882, operated
services over 140 route miles in Manchester, Salford, Patricroft, Oldham, Stalybridge
and Stockport, using 500 trams, 5300 horses and
had 20 depots. In Superb Original Condition. Never been offered in auction before. |
