A Stunning Selection of Heritage Diesel Nameplates
Consigned for our February Auction
Diesel Locomotive Nameplate “TRYFAN” As carried by Class 44 ‘Peak’ D10 later
becoming 44010 2/74.
Named at Derby Works when new and first allocated to
1B Camden 2/60.
Withdrawn from Toton due to fire damage 5/77 and cut up
at Derby Works during 7/78.
This nameplate is a resin replacement on a steel
back fitted in the 1970s to replace the missing aluminium original. Ex loco
condition.
Diesel Locomotive Nameplate
“THE KING’S SHROPSHIRE LIGHT INFANTRY”
As carried by Class 45 ‘Peak’ D50 which was renumbered to 45040 1/75 and 97412 10/87.
Allocated new to 17A Toton 5/62. Named at Toton depot in 5/65 without ceremony.
The nameplates were removed when the loco was withdrawn from Tinsley 7/87.
Loco transferred to Departmental stock 10/87 and numbered 97412 until withdrawn again 8/88. Stored in Tinsley Yard until 10/91 when it was moved to MC Metal Processing, Glasgow and cut up there 11/91.
BR Western Region Cast Aluminium Headboard
"PEMBROKE COAST EXPRESS"
Second style headboard introduced in the Summer of 1958 and used until the end of this service.
The arms of Tenby comprise three martlets in the upper section (From the arms of the Earl Of Pembroke) and three cinquefoils (from the arms of See of St David's) in the base.
Last titled run 7th September 1963.
Purchased on a scrap ticket by the Shed Master of Carmarthen Shed (87G) closed on the 13/04/1964.
A truly rare Ex Loco Example - stamped on the rear (CARM)
Locomotive Headboard “THE ROYAL DUCHY”.
This headboard was used on the
1.30pm service from Paddington to Penzance and the 11.00am service from
Penzance to Paddington commencing as a named train on the 28 th January
1957.
Both trains used Chocolate and Cream livery coaches and were hauled
by both steam and diesel locos including ‘Castles’ and the first batch of Class 41 ‘Warships’. Numbered between D600 - D604.

As the
Headboard incorporated the arms of the Duchy of Cornwall.
Royal approval had
to be sought before the name could be used.
The service ceased in 1965 but
the title has been used on diesel services since 1987.
Diesel Hydraulic Locomotive Nameplate “BULLDOG” As carried by Class 41 ‘Warship’ D602. Allocated new to 83D Plymouth Laira 11/58.
The nameplates were applied when built at NBL, Glasgow 11/58 and removed when the loco was withdrawn from Laira 12/67.
Cut up at J. Cashmore, Newport during 10/68.
Ex Warship Class 41 D601 ARK ROYAL
Diesel Hydraulic Locomotive Nameplate “STRONGBOW” As carried by Class 43 ‘Warship’ D847.
Allocated new to 83D Plymouth Laira 4/61.
The nameplates were applied when built at NBL, Glasgow 3/61 and removed when the loco was withdrawn from 83A Newton Abbot 3/71 after catching fire at Stoke Edith on 21/12/70. Moved to Swindon Works 4/71 and cut up there 3/72.
Diesel Locomotive Nameplate “CITY OF BRISTOL”
As carried by Class 43 HST
Power car 43126.
New to Old Oak Common 6/79.
Named at Bristol Temple
Meads station on the 17 th April 1985 by Councillor Claude Draper, Lord Mayor
of Bristol.
The nameplates were replaced in 9/91 by silver reflective plates until
new cast plates were fitted in 6/94.
The nameplates were removed in 10/06.
The loco is still in service and has been with ScotRail since 12/19. Cast
aluminium in ex loco condition.
Brass Steam Locomotive Nameplate WADEBRIDGE with West Country Scroll and Crest.
As carried by a Bulleid designed ex SR West Country Pacific 4-6-2 No 34007 built at Brighton works in August 1945 originally built with the No 21C107 this was changed due to Nationalisation in May 1949.
Allocations included Exmouth Jct, Nine Elma and Salisbury from where it was withdrawn in October 1965.
Originally sent to Barry Docks for scrap it was purchased from there in May 1981.
It is the oldest surviving West Country locomotive in preservation and is currently residing at the Mid Hants Railway, Ropley under overhaul and it is hoped that it will be able to steam again in 2026.
