Opening in 1898, the line was originally operated by 2ft gauge locomotives built by the Falcon Engine Works Loughborough and the Glasgow Railway Engineering Company. The line was subsequently converted to 3ft 6in gauge in 1900 and some of the narrow gauge locos sold to a Mozambique sugar estate and also to South African Railways. The Beira Railway Company was later incorporated into Rhodesian Railways. Six of the former BRC 4-4-0 steam locos built by Falcon during the period 1895 to1897 reportedly survive. Two are in Zimbabwe, one at the NRZ museum, and the second at Century Park, Bulawayo, with two others in South Africa, one at the James Hall Museum, Johannesburg, and the other at the Sandstone Steam Railway, Ficksburg. A further two were repatriated from Mozambique to the UK in 2000.

It was withdrawn from service in February 1966 and was cut up at Drapers of Hull May, 1966. Loco details together with copy of the sale invoice are attached to rear of mount. The loco was seen, together with other withdrawn B1s, on shed at Doncaster over a period of weeks between February and April 1966.

This is a 42½”0 plate and the letters for PALLAH (61025) can be seen ghosted in on the plate – a legacy of the casting process. You will note that it has been repainted and the back is lightly cleaned but, despite careful examination, I can’t find any evidence to say which side it was. It has been tapped to accept fitting to a backboard as these plates Smokebox based plates are quite difficult to display well. Both plates from OUREBI were sold at auction at Derby on 22 May 1965 and this is the first time, to the best of my knowledge that either has been offered for sale in the intervening 45 years. (See Railway Antiques Monthly April 1992). This particular plate had been used as a house name in Manchester!!!! Never been offered before in auction.

It was such a success that within 25 years there were over 60 similar omnibuses vying for passengers on the main road into Manchester. In 1880, a consolidation took place which created the Manchester Carriage and Tramways Company, by merging the MCC, Manchester & Salford Tramways Co., and Manchester Suburban Tramways Co. This company, at its greatest extent, in 1882, operated services over 140 route miles in Manchester, Salford, Patricroft, Oldham, Stalybridge and Stockport, using 500 trams, 5300 horses and had 20 depots.
