RAILWAYANA AUCTIONS UK LTD
STAFFORD AUCTION
SATURDAY 29th SEPTEMBER 2007
Welcome to our Third
Auction! We believe that we have again put together a
rather special auction, which features a number of items that are rare and some
that have never before been available at auction. We normally conduct our
Railwayana business via private treaty sales (through Railway Nameplates UK
Ltd), so that client confidentiality is maintained. In response to client requests, we now also have this auction
venture to give our clients the choice of sale arrangements. We aim to organise
further auctions. The next may be later
this year.
Venue – Our chosen venue has a history connected with railways. It is located in the north Midlands and has
good road and rail links. There is ample free parking and it is approx.
15-minute walk from the railway station. Very importantly, all facilities are
on ground level allowing access for wheelchairs. A restaurant will be available serving hot & cold meals
including a licensed bar.
Terms & Conditions
for the Auction - these can be found
overleaf. Please note that neither Buyer’s Premium nor VAT apply to any of the
auction lots.
Commission Bids - arrangements are available and are detailed near the
end of this catalogue. There is no
commission bid administration charge applicable at this auction. Please note that the latest time for the
receipt of postal bids is mid-day on Thursday 27th September. Telephone bids from known customers may be
accepted up to 6 pm on Friday 28th September.
Viewing – commences at 8 am on the day of the sale. Certain items can
only be viewed under the supervision of one of our stewards. We reserve the right to ask potential buyers
to leave bags and large coats outside the viewing area. Security surveillance will be in
operation.
Catalogue Images – Lots marked with an asterisk (*) indicates that an
image of the item is shown within this catalogue. We also recommend potential buyers to visit our website, where
larger images are available together with images not included in the
catalogue. www.ukrailwayana.com

to bid must register at the registration desk and obtain a bidding card before
the sale starts. Only one bidding card shall be issued per registered name.
2.
Ascertainment of the buyer
The Buyer shall be the person making the highest bid
which is acceptable to the Auctioneer as signified by the fall of the hammer.
In the case of a dispute as to the highest bid during or immediately after the
sale of the lot, the Auctioneer may if he thinks fit put up the lot again for
sale.
3.
Auctioneers discretion
The Auctioneer has sole discretion (a) to refuse any
bid, (b) to advance the bidding as he may decide, (c) to decide whether there
has been a dispute as to the bidding and under condition 2 to resell the lot in
question, (d) to withdraw or divide any lot or combine one lot with another or
others, and (e) to exclude any person from the auction room.
4.
Reserves and seller's right to bid
Lots put up for sale are subject to (a) to any
reserve price imposed by the Seller, and (b) the right of the Auctioneer to bid
on behalf of the Seller up to the amount of the reserve, but the Seller shall
not bid personally on any of his own lots. Neither the Auctioneer nor any
person employed at the sale shall bid personally for any lot.
5.
Buyer's duties
The Buyer shall at or before the end of the sale (a)
pay the full purchase price either in cash or by cheque up to any amount if the
Buyer is known to the Auctioneer or by prior arrangement, and (b) subject to
condition 6, forthwith clear the lots purchased.
6. Storage

cost.
7. Commission
bids
The Auctioneer will execute commission bids, free of
charge. Postal bidders should use the form near the back of the catalogue.
Commission bids will be executed as cheaply as possible having regard to any
reserve and other bids. The Auctioneer shall not, however, be responsible for
any neglect or default in executing or failing to execute any commission bid.
8.

faults and imperfections and neither the Seller nor the Auctioneer is
responsible for any defects whatsoever; (b) no warranty is given or authorised
to be given by the Seller or the Auctioneer with regard to any lot other than
that the Seller had the right to sell it; (c) any express or implied conditions
or warranties whether relating to description or quality, are hereby excluded.
9.
Inspection
Ample opportunity is given for viewing and the Buyer
by making a bid acknowledges that he has satisfied himself fully before
bidding, by inspection or otherwise, as to its condition. This includes the
physical condition and description including, but not restricted to, whether
the lot is damaged or has been repaired.
10. Catalogue descriptions
The Auctioneer undertakes that care has been taken to
see that catalogue descriptions, including rarity, origin and condition, are
accurate and reliable, taking into account all the information available when
the catalogue was prepared, but these are necessarily matters of opinion only
and shall not be taken to be statements of fact. Subject to Condition 11
neither the Seller nor the Auctioneer is responsible for the correctness of any
description. Any comments on the catalogue, lots or descriptions should be made
to the Auctioneer before the date of the sale and not on the day of the sale,
as this provides no opportunity to check any queries.
11.
Forgeries
Notwithstanding Conditions 8, 9, and 10, if the
Auctioneer receives notice in writing from the Buyer within 7 days of the sale
that in the Buyers opinion a lot is a forgery, and on giving such notification
the lot in question is returned to the Auctioneer at his working premises in
the same condition as when bought, then if, on considering such evidence as the
Buyer supplies to prove the Buyers assertion, the Auctioneer decides that the
lot is a forgery the sale of the lot will be rescinded and the purchase price
repaid to the Buyer.
12.
Property in lots and risk
The Buyer shall not become the owner of any lot, and
the Auctioneer shall have a lien thereon, until the Buyer has discharged the
purchase price.
13.
Default by Buyer
If the Buyer fails to pay
for or remove any lot bought by the Buyer or in any other material respect
fails to comply with these conditions, the Auctioneer shall have the right (a)
to resell the lot by public auction or otherwise without notice to the Buyer,
and, if any deficiency arises on such resale after deducting the Auctioneer's
full costs and expenses, the Buyer shall be responsible to the Seller and
Auctioneer therefore (but any net surplus to be the Seller's) or alternatively,
(b) to store the lot at the Auctioneer's premises or elsewhere and to release
the lot to the Buyer only after payment in full of all reasonable storage and
removal expenses incurred (in addition to the purchase price).
14.
Liability of Auctioneer
All persons attending a Sale under the conduct of the
Auctioneer shall be deemed to be on the land and premises at their risk and
shall have no claim against the Auctioneer in respect of cancellation/postponement

An Incredible Rare Treasure Unearthed. A C/I. Oval Wagon plate “CITY OF
BIRMINGHAM, BUILDERS, GAS DEPARTMENT”. Dug up from the Ex Cambrian Railway
Works carriage siding’s in Oswestry, now part of a new building development
site. The vendor was erecting a new boundary fence, while digging out a hole,
hit & unearthed this historic, never seen before plate. WHAT A FIND!!.
UNTOUCHED. Size 8½”x 5”. Further info has revealed that this plate probably
came off a 4 wheel wagon that were used in the building of the “The Élan
Valley Dams and Reservoirs” in the late 19th & early 20th century.
Building of the railway began in 1893. It was built of standard gauge and
built in four stages. A double junction was
built to join it to the Cambrian Railway near Rhayader. The Élan Valley
Railway Branch Line was inspected and passed by a Board of Trade Inspector in
July 1894 and the Élan Valley Railway branch was officially born. Railway 4
took the route to Craig Goch Dam. Blasting the cutting mid-way along the
route held up the construction by 3 months, earning itself the name Devil’s
Gulch. The sharp curve of the tracks required short wheelbase locomotives.
The locomotives were all named after rivers and streams on the Estate. The
first two were acquired in April 1894 and were named Élan and Claerwen. These
were joined by Nant Gwyllt and Methan in October and Rhiwnant and Calettwr in
1895. The Visitor Centre has been converted from the old workshops and part
of the car park was the site of the locomotive shed and sidings. By 1898 the
steep 1:33 gradients of the railway had taken their toll on the original
locomotives, so Coel and Marchnant were bought. At its busiest time the
railway had an estimated 53 kilometres (33 miles) of track. Seventeen coaches
were used for transporting men to the work sites and the tracks were used for
steam powered cranes, power drills and crushers. In 1906 the Birmingham
Corporation Water Works locomotives were sold. In 1908 the Élan Valley Double
Junction was dismantled. Finally in 1916 the Élan Valley Railway was
completely closed. You can now retrace the old route of the railway by
following the Elan Valley Trail, which runs for 13 kilometres (8 miles) from
Cwmdauddwr (just outside Rhayader) to Craig Goch Dam.

until August 1956, after which it was variously shedded for brief periods at
Salop 84G, Canton 86C, Severn Tunnel 86E until allocated to Pontypool Road

ending up at Didcot 81E until withdrawn from there in July 1965. The
locomotive was scrapped at Cohens of Kettering in October 1965. UNDERLEY HALL
